Salary for a Newly Employed TSC Teacher
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC), has a job grading system put in place for teachers according to their academic qualifications and/or experiences. Grade B5 is the entry-level for primary school teachers. Grade C1 belongs to holders of a diploma in education. Grade C2 is the entry grade for secondary school teachers who are holders of a bachelor’s degree in education. D5 is the senior-most grade and is the grade in which senior administrators like chief principals are placed.
Each job grade has its allocated amount of monthly basic salaries. A B5 grade teacher earns a lower monthly salary while D5 gets the highest basic monthly income.
There are 3 entry grades in which teachers are employed by the TSC: Primary school (grade B5), secondary school (grade C2) and diploma holder teachers (grade C1) their salaries are as shown below:
1. Salary for a Newly Employed Primary School TSC Teacher (Grade B5)
A newly employed primary school teacher falls in the TSC job grade of B5 (T-scale 5; Primary teacher II). The basic salary for teachers in this grade is between Ksh. 16,000 and 27,000.
To be eligible to be employed by TSC at this level, one must have attained a mean grade of C (plain) in KCSE and must also have a Primary Teacher Certificate (PTE).
To be promoted to the next grade which is C1, one must have served at this grade for a minimum of 3 years.
2. Salary for a Newly Employed Secondary School TSC Teacher (Grade C2)
Grade C2 ( T-scale 7; Secondary educator II) Is the entry grade for a newly employed secondary school teacher. A teacher that falls into this category earns a minimum basic salary of Ksh. 34,955 and a maximum of Ksh. 43,694.
To be employed by TSC to work as a secondary school teacher at this level, one must attain a KCSE mean grade of C+ (plus), have a bachelor’s degree in education and have two teaching subjects.
Qualifications for promotion to the next grade which is C3 ( T-scale 8; Secondary school teacher I), is that one must serve at this grade for not less than 3 years. One must have also performed remarkably well during that period.
3. Salary for a Newly Employed Diploma Holder TSC Teacher (Grade C1)
Grade C1 ( T-scale 6; Secondary teacher III), is the entry grade for secondary school teachers who are holders of a diploma in education. The basic monthly salaries for teachers in this job grade range from Ksh. 19,000 to Ksh. 33,000.
A KCSE mean grade of C+ (plus), a diploma in education and two teaching subjects are the required qualifications to be employed in this job grade.
