Mumias Veterans Triumph in Intense GovernorsCup2024 Final as Butsotso Queens Claim Women’s Title

The grand finale of the highly anticipated GovernorsCup2024 unfolded at the Mumias Sports Complex on Saturday, with His Excellency President William Ruto gracing the event. The championship matches brought together football enthusiasts, dignitaries, and passionate athletes in a thrilling display of skill and determination.
In the men’s final, Mumias Veterans from Mumias West Constituency edged out Ikolomani’s Arsenal Lirhembe in a nail-biting penalty shootout, clinching the title with a 5-4 victory. Arsenal Lirhembe, despite their impressive performance, were left to rue their third consecutive loss in a final. Previously, they had fallen to Umri FC in the inaugural edition and suffered an early exit to Young Africans in the subsequent tournament.
The victory earned Mumias Veterans a cash prize of KSH 2,000,000, while Arsenal Lirhembe, the first runners-up, took home KSH 1,500,000. The 2nd runners-up received KSH 1,000,000, and the 3rd runners-up walked away with KSH 750,000.
In the women’s final, Butsotso Queens from Lurambi triumphed over Classic FC from Likuyani in a thrilling 3-2 encounter. Their victory marked a significant achievement for women’s football in Kakamega County, with Butsotso Queens taking home KSH 1,000,000 as champions. Classic FC, despite their valiant effort, earned KSH 750,000 as runners-up. The 2nd and 3rd runners-up in the women’s category received KSH 500,000 and KSH 250,000, respectively.
Kakamega Governor Fernandez Barasa congratulated all the teams for their exceptional performances and praised the tournament as a vital platform for showcasing talent and fostering community unity. “Your commitment not only showcases impressive talent but also aligns with our Social Development Pillar under the six-point agenda,” he stated, highlighting the importance of sports in the county’s overall development.
The event, which drew a large crowd of football enthusiasts, was also attended by several dignitaries, including Cabinet Secretary for Sports Deborah Barasa, Governor Kenneth Lusaka of Bungoma, First Lady Prof. Janet Kassilly Barasa, Senator Bonny Khalwale, and various Members of Parliament and County Assemblies.
The Governor thanked the participants and the crowd for making the event a resounding success, reaffirming the county’s commitment to supporting sports as a key avenue for youth empowerment, economic growth, and social cohesion.
With this year’s #GovernorsCup drawing to a close, anticipation is already building for next year’s edition, as Kakamega continues to solidify its place as a hub of football talent and enthusiasm in the region.  Read More
