On July Safaricom announced a smartphone deal that will see Safaricom customers acquire 4G enabled smartphones at Ksh.20 a day payment. In a unique partnership with Google and a first in the world, Safaricom will now give qualifying customers easier access to the internet through the Neon Ray Pro, a 4G enabled Android (Go edition) smartphone.
The world first initiative dubbed Lipa Mdogo Mdogo in partnership with Android, Google’s operating system for mobile, will allow qualifying customers access to the internet and the world of possibilities through a smartphone that they can pay-as-they-use on a daily or weekly basis.
With the Neon Ray Pro 4G smartphones, Safaricom will increase the penetration of 4G enabled devises among Kenyans from the current 17% rate.
“To democratize data, one will need to have a 4G smartphone device. Today, the penetration is only at 17 percent. The most important aspect to reach this goal is affordability and accessibility,” Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa said.
“The impact of the pandemic has exposed the inequalities that exist for people who are unable to access the internet. This is something I am personally committed to addressing to ensure we leave no one behind” Ndegwa Stated
Safaricom clients will be required to pay an initial fee of Ksh.1000 before you can be given the smartphone. One will then have to pay Ksh. 20 for 9 months to fully cover the full amount.
Qualification To Get The Smartphone
To qualify, you need to be above 18 years of age, you must have used your Safaricom line for at least 1 year, & you must be a regular user of Safaricom products such as SMS, calling or M-PESA. You must also currently be using a 2G feature phone.
How To Get The Phone
To participate, customers need to dial *544#, Select Lipa Mdogo Mdogo option and accept the terms and conditions to opt into the service, after which they will receive an SMS approval of their eligibility and the value of the device they can purchase under the service.
