Deputy President Kindiki Engages Small-Scale Traders in Nairobi

  Deputy President Kithure Kindiki held an early morning meeting with representatives of small-scale traders from various markets across Nairobi County to discuss ways of improving the business environment and supporting their growth. The meeting, which took place on on Monday morning focused on the National Government’s interventions aimed at supplementing the efforts of the Nairobi City County Government in supporting traders in key areas.
In his address, Deputy President Kindiki acknowledged the vital role that small-scale traders play in driving the local economy, particularly within Nairobi’s bustling Central Business District (CBD) and surrounding markets. These markets include Wakulima, Gikomba, Muthurwa, Kariokor, Country Bus, Nyamakima, River Road, Railways, Pumwani Road, Bus Station, and OTC, which are home to thousands of traders and businesses.
“We understand the challenges faced by traders, especially those in the informal sector, and we are committed to ensuring that the National Government supports them in every way possible,” said Deputy President Kindiki. “This engagement is part of our ongoing efforts to create an environment that is conducive to business growth and provides opportunities for all.”
The Deputy President outlined several interventions that the National Government will implement to complement the Nairobi City County Government’s efforts. These initiatives include improving market infrastructure, enhancing security, providing access to affordable credit for traders, and promoting digital platforms to help small businesses expand their reach.
“We are focused on making Nairobi’s markets safer and more accessible to all traders, ensuring they have the tools and support they need to thrive,” he added.
The discussions also touched on key issues such as taxation, market organization, and the need for better waste management systems to improve the overall environment in the markets.
Traders who participated in the engagement expressed their appreciation for the government’s proactive approach and commitment to addressing their concerns. “It’s reassuring to know that the government is listening to our challenges and is actively working towards practical solutions,” said one of the traders.
The Deputy President concluded the meeting by emphasizing the importance of collaboration between national and county governments in fostering an inclusive business environment. He reiterated that the government’s priority is to ensure that all traders, regardless of size, have the opportunity to succeed.
With the engagement marking another step toward strengthening small businesses in Nairobi, Deputy President Kindiki assured the traders that the government will continue to work closely with them to create an environment where their businesses can flourish.
