Ensuring the Security of Educational Institutions as Schools Reopen

By John Kariuki As schools reopen, the safety and security of students and staff must be the top priority. Dr. Peter Mwangi, a seasoned expert in safety management and CEO of Guardnow Security Group, emphasizes the urgent need for educational institutions to adopt robust measures to safeguard learners and educators. Past tragedies such as the Garissa University attack, the Moi Girls School fire, and the Hillside Academy fire serve as grim reminders of the consequences of inadequate security planning.Dr. Mwangi outlines critical strategies that schools can implement to create a secure environment. Strengthening access control systems is fundamental. Modern technology, including biometric and card access systems, ensures that only authorized personnel, students, and parents can enter school premises. Visitor registration and identification further enhance control, while clear and monitored emergency exits provide a vital safety mechanism.Another key measure is the deployment of trained security personnel on school grounds. Dr. Mwangi advocates for visible yet approachable guards who can deter threats and provide reassurance. These personnel should be equipped with skills in first aid, conflict resolution, and emergency response, enabling them to handle sensitive situations effectively and calmly.Preparedness is paramount. Dr. Mwangi recommends that institutions develop comprehensive crisis management plans. Regular drills for scenarios such as active shooter threats and intrusions can ensure students and staff are ready to act decisively. Clear protocols for lockdowns and evacuations, coupled with reliable communication systems like SMS alerts, ensure swift and coordinated responses during emergencies.Technology also plays a significant role in enhancing school security. Surveillance systems, including CCTV cameras strategically placed at entrances, hallways, and high-traffic zones, help deter criminal activity and aid in real-time monitoring. Mobile apps designed for incident reporting and response coordination can further bolster safety measures.Transportation security should not be overlooked. Dr. Mwangi stresses the importance of equipping school buses with GPS tracking, cameras, and trained drivers. For students walking home, offering escort services can provide an additional layer of protection.Collaboration with local authorities is another essential aspect of school safety. Dr. Mwangi advises forming partnerships with law enforcement to ensure swift emergency responses and regular safety audits. Programs that address issues like cyberbullying, substance abuse, and violence prevention can further strengthen the safety framework.Parents play a crucial role in this collective effort. Dr. Mwangi encourages open communication between schools and parents, keeping them informed about security measures and emergency procedures. Safety awareness sessions for parents and students can ensure everyone is aligned and proactive in fostering a secure environment. In today’s interconnected world, cybersecurity is an increasingly important dimension of school safety. Dr. Mwangi highlights the need to monitor social media for threats and educate students about responsible online behavior. These steps can prevent potential risks from escalating and promote a culture of digital responsibility.Dr. Mwangi and Guardnow Security Group emphasize that creating a secure educational environment is not just a precaution—it is a shared responsibility. Through vigilance, collaboration, and continuous improvement, educational institutions can provide students with a safe space to learn and thrive, free from fear and uncertainty.  Read More
