Education Ministry Clears The Air On Payment Of Teachers Who Will Not Participate in Community Based Learning Program

• The Ministry also clarified that the program will not replace the main curriculum but will play a key role in engaging learners through various learning activities and reduce idleness among school going children.

For days reports in the public domain had indicated that teachers who will fail to participate in Community Based  Learning Program will miss their pay from their employer TSC.
This was following a statement from the Education Chief Administrative (CAS) Zachary Kinuthia that teachers who will not participate in the community learning program will not get paid.
“ Teachers who will fail to register for the community Based Learning Program will not get paid, Such teachers would be considered to have absconded” the CAS stated.
However, the ministry of education has come out to clear the air on the fate of teachers who will fail to participate in the program. In a letter dated 23^rd August 23, 2020 and signed by Education CS Dr George Magoha , the ministry has stated that the community Based learning program is not tied to the payment teachers’ ,monthly salaries.

“The teachers’ participation in the Community Based Learning Program is not tied to the payment of their monthly salaries. The ministry therefore wishes clarify media reports to the effect that teachers who have yet to enroll for the programme will be denied their monthly salaries.” The statement read.
The ministry further encouraged all teachers who were yet to enroll to do so so as facilitate the running of the program.
The ministry of education in conjunction with TSC plans to launch the program countrywide soon. So far over 224,500 teachers have registered for the program. Of these, over 155,200 are primary school teachers while over 69,300 are secondary school teachers.
TSC and the ministry of education have already issued out guidelines for implementation of the Community Based Learning Program.
The Ministry also clarified that the program will not replace the main curriculum but will play a key role in engaging learners through various learning activities and reduce idleness among school going children.
Earlier on CS  Magoha had stated that there will be no syllabus for the Community Based Learning.
To ensure the effectiveness of the program, the ministry plans to utilize the nyumba Kumi programme to ensure that all learners participate in the program.
Mr Kinuthia advised teachers to look at the opportunity brought by the program. He said the national government and the county governments are working hand in hand to ensure they provide water,soap and masks for teachers and learners.
