Chuka University is the 9^th Public University in Kenya Chartered in 2013. the university admits both government sponsored and self sponsored students. It started prophetically in the 1950’s when area residents decided to use higher education to accelerate their socio-economic development. It is located on the serene eastern slopes of the snow-capped Mount Kenya in Chuka Town, Meru South, Tharaka-Nithi County at about 186 km from Nairobi city.

The university offers both undergraduate and post graduate courses. All the course offered at Chuka University are accredited by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Services, KUCCPS.

Chuka University was the first higher education institution to be established in Eastern Kenya. The reason the Government established Chuka University was to enhance access to quality higher education in Kenya and beyond. This was after recognizing that education leads to better socio-economic and political outcomes and governance.

Chuka University offers both Certificate, Diploma, Higher Diploma, Degree, Masters and PhD programs in various fields. Most university degree courses take a minimum of 4 years; while, some take even more. However, diploma courses at the university take an average of 3 years. The university has E-learning courses that allows students to learn online. In total, the university offers over 75 programs.

Chuka University Intake and Admission Requirements

To undertake any degree course at Chuka University, one is required to have attained a KCSE mean grade of C+ and above with C+ English or Kiswahili. You will also need to have attained at least C+ in subjects related to your field of studies. Certificate and Diploma courses have less qualification requirement by the university.

Admission at Chuka University happens each year. The main intake usually happens in September. The university carries out intakes in the months of January and May as well.
