An International School in Berlin Germany named after Wangari Maathai

Professor Wangari Maathai continues to be celebrated across the world even in her absence, and Wangari Maathai International School in Berlin Germany is the latest institution to be named after the environmental activist in her honor.
They say the name was picked by parents in honour of the late environmental activist and Nobel Peace Prize Winner.
“The school’s official naming ceremony was celebrated on 22 March 2019. Parents of the school school collected suggestions for names and decided on “Wangari Maathai International School”. We are very proud to represent Wangari Maathai and her legacy.” The school stated on its website
The school says it is specifically designed to meet the needs of students from all over the world and offer them sophisticated bilingual education in English and German which is based on German and international curricula.
The school runs both elementary and secondary school programs.
“Our school was named after the Kenyan-born Wangari Maathai, who represented our Guiding principles of community, inclusiveness and democracy as well as being an inspiration for students to become active, global citizens who create positive change in the world and the Environment that connects us all.” The school stated.
“We named our school after this admirable woman because we want to encourage our students to be similarly committed and embracing to our world.” The school affirmed
Professor Wangari Muta Maathai, born in 1940, was a Kenyan professor and women’s rights and environmental activist who was the first African to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. She founded the “Green Belt Movement” which combats poverty through reforestation and preserves forests in East Africa.
This is not the first time the late Professor Wangari Maathai is receiving such recognition even in her absence. Back in 2019 the government of France launched a public school, Ecole Wangari Maathai, built in her honour.
Some years back, a statue of an image resembling the professor was unveiled in the United States of America,
Back in 2015, the African Union celebrated and honoured the late Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Prof Wangari Maathai by naming the gardens in front of its headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia after her.

The proposal to honour the late Kenyan environmentalist was made by Congo during the just concluded 25th AU Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The celebrated environmentalist introduced the idea of planting trees while serving in the National Council of Women in 1976, a concept she developed into the now famous  ‘The Green Belt Movement’.
She assisted women in planting more than 20 million trees on their farms and on schools and church compounds.
