KNUT Withdraws Teachers Strike Notice Following a New Salary Deal

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary general has withdrawn a strike notice issued two weeks ago following a new salary deal.
In his letter to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), the KNUT Secretary general  Wilson Sossion stated that KNUT is retracting its initial strike it had issued earlier.
“Note that we had already registered a trade dispute with the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Labour. However, based on the commission’s response citing the process of concluding internal consultations with SRC, we hereby retract our letter to the CS and urge that you give strict and clear timelines of undertaking the salary negotiations.” the letter reads in part.
The Salaries and Remuneration Commission’s (SRC) advisory on teachers’ new salary deal is said to have pushed the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) to put brakes on a strike threat they had issued two weeks ago.
KNUT’s move entirely relying on the advisory from the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) where the commission admits not to have concluded the job evaluation for all teachers, a process that is crucial in guiding the CBA negotiations.
The SRC is currently undertaking job evaluation exercise that will inform its decision on the third remuneration review cycle in the public service,

According to the SRC negotiation framework for the period 2021-2025, a direction shall be issued once the ongoing job evaluation exercise is complete.
The move now breaths a sigh of relief for smooth carrying out of national exams in schools that is set to commence in March.
