Man Loses Kh.20 Million SportPesa Jackpot to fraudsters

Makadara Chief Magistrate Hestom Nyaga has granted an order for investigation in alleged fraud case where a man lost ksh.20 Million Sportpesa jackpot to fraudsters.
The case was brought to light following investigation launched by Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) following claims by Lazarus Vundi Muthini that he lost the winning of his multi bets from Sportpesa using a phone number that was registered in his name back in 2018.
Following the loss, he lodged a complaint against Sportpesa at Ruaraka police station on October 1, 2019.
Muthini recorded a statement with the police stating that he won in multi-bets during the month of October 2018 but payment was diverted.

Police constable Allan Ochieno of Starehe DCI offices obtained orders at Makadara law courts directing Safaricom and Sportpesa to assist the police with the investigations into the matter.
“During that month, Muthini came to realize that his account number had been hacked during which a sum of Sh200,000 multi-bet winnings had been fraudulently transferred from his account to one Sammy Kamito Musembi and that consequently, he was not paid his legitimate winnings of Sh20 million, but the same was allegedly paid to another person,” Ochieno stated in an affidavit seen by Nairobi News.
Lazarus Muthini also alleges that an unknown person who had earlier hacked his account bought Sh50 airtime and fueled their car using an M-Pesa till number on September 21, 2019.
Ocheino obtained orders Chief Magistrate Hestom Nyaga directing Safaricom to give him certified documents bearing particulars of the phone that Muthini claims to be his and its Mpesa statements for the period he claims his money was diverted. The matter is being treated as a case of obtaining money by false pretense.

The investigative authorities will also receive certified documents of ownership, betting history, deposits and withdrawal transactions in respect of Muthini’s phone number.
Life has been breathed into the case just months after Sportpesa announced its comeback in Kenya.
The giant sports betting company had been embroiled into tax evasion claims that saw its operating license withdrawn.
However, early this year Sportpesa was given green light to carry on its operations in the country again.
