 The Genesis

Early Wednesday popular coffee and bakery joint Artcraffe was in trouble after they offered to pay winners of their art competition with free coffee and exposure to their artistic work.
Dubbed #ARTofthecity, the campaign called upon creative of the city to decorate their coffee cups in exchange of Ksh.100,000 cash prize or free coffee daily for a period of 1 year. However, Artcaffe would later change their terms and downsized the offer to Ksh.50,000 or free coffee for a period of 6 months to the winner.
“We hear you. Let’s try this again…Re-launching our updated #ARTofthecity competition, where we are celebrating the creatives of our city. Design our holiday take-away cups, reach the city with your talent and more! Read updated competition details here…”Read part of the advert.
The change of the terms did not go down well with Kenyans prompting many to and their critics on how industries are misusing and underpaying Kenyan creative. Many took to Twitter and Facebook to vent their anger.
“This is the third time they are doing this. The second time they still wanted to pay people with “exposure”…they think their exposure pays bills. They are just doing this because of the backlash.”One at @KenyanKisii wrote.
@MrCeco wrote. These @Artcaffee do not even have the audacity to apologise to creatives. How are they ‘updating’ a wrong, manipulative and exploitative statement? Gina, they are missing the reputation management aspect of public relations. You may offer your services therein.
@LOgwalla wrote. This is good…. However, APOLOGIZE to the artist community. It’s like you people only changed this because of public outcry and not because you did something wrong.
Jalang’o was not left behind as he weighed in on these too. He supported the competition and the action taken by artcaffe sighting  exposure the creative will gain as more important than the offer.
“Many people in the creative sometimes just need platforms to showcase their work and that’s why if you were to organize a talent or creative search millions of creative will come out just to have that platform” The Kiss 100 funny man said.
I once or twice asked creative to design my logs at 10K for the best, 10K is not even worth what they created for me but by posting their work even many who did not win came back saying from the post they got jobs.” Jalang’o stated.
