Sportpesa put on hold by the Government shortly after making a comeback
Sports betting company Sportpesa announced its comeback yesterday but its operations have been put on hold by BCLB following its partnership with Milestone gaming Limited.
The regulator Betting Control and Licensing Board BCLB has suspended its license over an alleged violation of regulatory protocol.
According to the agreement between Sportpesa and Milestone, Milestone Gaming Limited was supposed to be the new company operating as Sportpesa as announced by Sportpesa CEO Ronald Karauri.
“SportPesa is back! I’m happy to announce that the SportPesa brand is back under a new BCLB license holder,” Karauri had stated.
However, BCLB came out to suspend the go ahead of their operation siting it unlawful.
According to BCLB chairman Cyrus Maina, Sportpesa unscrupulously obtained a go ahead to relaunch under Milestone Gaming Limited and this resulted in suspension of their license.
“We note that Milestone Games Limited has been authorized to use the trademark Sportpesa by Sportpesa Global Holding Limited, whereas during the 2020/2021 Financial Year renewal application, the board authorized the use of trading name Milestone Bet to yourselves” A letter from BCLB read.
