Former Tanzanian President Benjamin Mpaka Is Dead
The former Tanzanian President Benjamin William Mpaka is dead. The news was broken to the world by Tanzanian president John Pombe Magufulu in a televised national address. While addressing the Nation, Magufuli Stated that President Benjamin Mpaka died while undergoing treatment in hospital at Dar Es Saalam.
Mpaka was the third president of Tanzania and he died at the age of 81.
President Magufuli said the country had lost a national icon and a pillar as Mpaka played a vital role building the economy of Tanzania and fostering peace.
“Nimesikitishwa na kifo cha Mzee wetu Benjamin Mkapa (Rais Mstaafu wa Awamu ya 3). Nitamkumbuka kwa mapenzi yake makubwa kwa Taifa, ucha Mungu, uchapakazi na utendaji wake katika kujenga uchumi. Hakika Taifa limepoteza nguzo imara. Mungu aiweke roho yake mahali pema peponi, Amina.” President Magufuli wrote on his Twitter handle
President Uhuru Kenyatta has sent a message of condolence to President John Joseph Pombe Magufuli, the People of the United Republic of Tanzania and the family of Former President Benjamin Mkapa who passed away earlier today.
President Mpaka played a Key role in fostering piece in Kenya after the 2007 Kenyan disputed election. He was at the forefront in brokering a coalition deal agreement between the then President Kibaki and Raila Odinga.
Former Tanzania President Benjamin Mkapa will be remembered by Kenyans for his mediation efforts together with Koffi Annan and Graca Machel that helped the country return to peace after the 2007-2008 post-election violence. They oversaw unity Kibaki Raila Unity.
